If you live in Central Texas, water isn’t just something that comes out of the tap, it’s part of our landscape, our livelihoods, and our daily decisions.
Much of that water comes from the Edwards Aquifer, a vast underground system that supplies water to millions of people, supports agriculture, and sustains the natural beauty of our region.
But for many families, the aquifer can feel like an abstract concept—we know it is important, but hard to picture or explain.
That’s exactly why we’re so excited to host a family friendly Aquifer 101 event with the Greater Edwards Aquifer Alliance at the Santuary!
Making Big Ideas Simple (and Family-Friendly)
We believe that environmental education should feel approachable, engaging, and—most importantly—something families can experience together.
During our Aquifer 101 event, we’re welcoming the Greater Edwards Aquifer Alliance to guide us through the basics:
Where our water comes from
How the aquifer works beneath our feet
What current conditions mean for our community
Why This Matters for Families
Kids are naturally curious about water. They notice rain, puddles, mud, and the way the land changes after a storm. What they don’t always see is what happens next—how that water moves underground and becomes part of something much bigger.
By introducing these ideas early, we help children:
Build a connection to the natural world
Understand the importance of conservation
See how their everyday actions impact the environment
And for adults, it’s a chance to better understand the systems that support our homes, gardens, and communities.
Hands-On Learning: Build Your Own Rain Gauge
One of our favorite parts of this event is a simple, hands-on activity designed especially for kids. When kids are busy building their rain gauge and making their own connections with the aquifer, adults can be nearby listening and learning from the Greater Edwards Aquifer Alliance.
Using recycled materials, children can create a tool to measure rainfall at home. It’s a small project with a big impact—helping kids connect rainfall to what they’ve learned about the aquifer.
Rainfall is one of the primary ways the aquifer is replenished.
When kids measure rain in their own backyard, they begin to understand that connection in a real, tangible way.
Learning in a Place That Makes Sense
There’s something powerful about learning these concepts outside, surrounded by animals, gardens, and open space.
At Winding Branch Ranch, we see every day how water supports life—from the plants growing in our garden to the animals in our care. Hosting this event in a natural setting helps bridge the gap between concept and reality.
It’s not just a lesson—it’s an experience.
A Community Approach to Education
This event is part of a larger goal: making meaningful, nature-based education accessible to our community.
By offering this program free of charge (with donations encouraged), we’re able to welcome more families into the conversation—because understanding our environment shouldn’t come with a barrier to entry.
Join Us
Whether you’re a parent, educator, gardener, or simply someone who wants to better understand where your water comes from, we invite you to join us.
Bring your questions. Bring your curiosity. Bring your kids.
Let’s learn together—about water, about our region, and about the role we all play in caring for it.
